Reflection on the role of a nursing educator in the 21^st century

This is a dynamic one with continuous change in the modes of education delivery. The emergence of  technology has shifted students demographics, their learning needs and reshaped the educational landscape.  Nursing educators has to adapt to an educational era where technology is on the forefront and must be incorporated in teaching and learning to keep up the momentum. So, educators need to get on board. They are faced with the challenge of guiding students in problem solving and critical thinking skills to adapt to the constant changes in the future.

The 21st Century learning environments would be well‐equipped with computer hardware, software, electronic whiteboards and rich digital and online curricular resources.  As you enter a 21st Century learning environment, it would be facilitated by interactive learning, higher level thinking skills, and student engagement. So, it is necessary the educators identify the challenges that exist and incorporate measures to overcome same.¹

  

 CHALLENGES IN FULLFILLING THE NURSING EDUCATOR ROLE IN THE 21^ST CENTURY

Technological Advancement

 

Nursing educators must harness the power of technology for enhanced learning experiences. They must integrate digital tools and online resources into the classroom which can be overwhelming. Nursing educators must become proficient in utilizing technology such as simulation dolls to engage and empower students. Educators are faced with ensuring responsible and ethical use of technology for teaching and learning².

Changing Student Demographics:

The 21st-century classroom is more diverse with students from various cultural, linguistic, and socio-economic backgrounds. Teachers must adopt inclusive teaching practices to address the unique needs of each student, creating an inclusive and equitable culturally sensitive learning environment².

  Evolving Learning Needs:

Educators need to continually update their knowledge and adapt their instructional practices accordingly. Traditional models of education are no longer sufficient to meet the diverse learning needs of the 21^st century. The focus has shifted from rote memorization to fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration skills².

Educational content

It is of paramount importance that Nursing educators gain a better understanding of educational content suited for the 21^st century as this is the method of communicating information to the students. This would enable them to make use of educational video, PowerPoint and games just to name a few for the purpose of teaching. Hence keeping their students engaged and motivated with teaching content³.

Design models

Design models provide guidelines to organize various pedological scenario to achieve instructional goals. This would benefit the educator by assisting with planning learning outcomes and selecting effective strategies for teaching and learning also to be able to incorporate the relevant technology for teaching and evaluation³.  An example is the ASSURE model which provides a systemic approach to designing lessons. The instructional material ensures that the learning outcomes are achieved and learners are engaged in the learning process⁴.

Lesson plan

Knowledge of the lesson plan enables the educator to develop a road map on how students learn and what can be done during the class and allows the educator to plan ahead. This would enable them to plan sessions that incorporates materials for the changing student demographics and evolving learning needs.

 

Learning objectives

 

Educators in the 21^st century must incorporate learning objectives in a strategic manner to develop higher order thinking skills, communication and collaboration  along  with technological skills needed in the 21^st century.

Conclusion

 

  Collaborative planning and investment in core components for technology along with intensive professional development for educators will not only transform how to use technology but also how to integrate technology into the curriculum with rich digital content and IT support. These key elements will allow educators to adapt and overcome the challenges of the 21^st century education.
