The community of inquiry (COI)

The community of inquiry is a frame work that highlights social presence, teaching presence and cognitive presence as essential elements that facilities successful educational experiences in online distance learning environment[1]

Social presence	The ability to interact with others in a meaningful way. To develop interpersonal relationships and communicate purposefully in a trusting environment.[1]
Cognitive presence	The extent to which participants can construct and confirm meaning through sustained communication.[1]
Teaching presence	The design, facilitation and direction and direction of cognitive and social processes for meaningful learning.[1]

Information & communication Technology (ICT)

 

The utilization of computers, the internet and communication network in teaching and learning.[2]

 

COI & ICT INTEGRTION

 

 

ZOOM

 

 

 

Zoom is a video conferencing tool that allows students and teachers to meet synchronously online via computer, tablets or mobile device. Zoom link invitations are sent and teachers can use the numerous features that zoom offers such as screen sharing, breakout rooms, chat messages, polls and white board. This facilitates social presence of discussions, comrade sense of belonging among students and with the instructors. The ability to have real time discussions get to know each interactions through presentations. It also allows for teaching presence which allows the instructor to design activities using break out rooms and polls. Also, the cognitive presence as meaning where the students engage with the course content collaborate, explore and reflect and integrate new understanding for learning.[3]

Teaches can use this recording tool to create lectures, student feedback and assignment instructions. The teacher can prepare online content and upload video creating learning modules for students. The cognitive presence is evident where the students construct meaning from this engagement. The teaching presence is also integrated as this is another method of teaching and learning activity using an online design.[3]

Blogger

This platform allows educators and students to share knowledge, engage in conversation and foster a sense of community. The integration of all the elements of COI frame work is evident. it allows interaction among students as they comment of each other blog the social presence. The interaction with educator in this design of teaching and learning the teacher presence. The cognitive presence as valuable information is shared among student and teacher and allows students to think critically and logically.[3]

This allows for an effective educational platform; educators can use these videos during online class sessions for discussions causing interaction among students sharing views and creating a social presence. The teacher presence is visible as several key elements can be taught from viewing an educational video. The cognitive presence occurs as meaning is derived from the engagement of the videos for teaching and learning purposes.[3]

 

 

 

The use of games in education in the online environment makes learning more meaningful, authentic, accessible and engaging. Teachers can personalize instructions and design indicating the teacher presence, the interactions of the games and quizzes incorporates the social presence and the meaning derived from the activity relates to the cognitive presence.[4]

Integration of technology 

Conclusion

 Integration of the COI framework and ICT is key in the blended and online education platforms. The various technology tools used in teaching and learning creates an engaged classroom with the presence of components of teacher presence, social presence and cognitive presence. Collectively the integration   of the COI framework and technology supports and enhances the educational environment.
