My name is Cherry Ann Hackshaw-Titte, I am a Registered Nurse and Licensed midwife. I am from the lovely Caribbean Island of Trinidad sun, sand and sea. I love to travel and recently stared cycling which I find to be very relaxing and therapeutic. This is my first experience with a blog so come along and share this new and exciting experience with me.

My experience with technology

In my line of work and previous schooling there was no great emphasis placed on technology so my knowledge was very limited. However, when I decided to embark on my continuing education journey my encounter with technology happened like a storm very sudden and without warning. When the pandemic struck, I was in my first year of the BScN in nursing education at the University of the West Indies. When lockdown came and everything went online imagine my situation I was totally lost, confused and sometimes anxious about accessing classes and conducting online exams and also registration for the new semesters. It was so bad that I kept my oldest son home from school some days to assist with navigating the computer to upload my results. However, I can safely say I have come a long way and I am being able to navigate my way independently on my computer rating myself to 6/10. I know there is lots more to learn as technology evolves so quickly buts it’s an exciting field and I am look forward to enhance my knowledge from this course and continue to do so in the future.

What are some of the major similarities and differences among face-to-face learning, online learning and blended learning?

 

Similarities

The three modes of delivery offer educational content and communication is required to complete the course of study. Communication occurs in different ways among students and educators to facilitate the learning process.

All modes of learning require the instruction from an educator.

All three modes can offer evaluation measures to test knowledge and skills acquired in the mode of delivery and can incorporate both formative and summative assessments.

Students in all the modes of delivery are expected to attend classes, be taught course content engage in group work all to ensure a high quality of educational standards.

Differences

Face to face learning in provided in a physical classroom whereas online takes place in the virtual setting and blended is a mix of both modes of delivery.

Face to face is rigid and does not allow for flexibility classes are set and students must commute to the physical learning environment. Online provides more flexibility where classes can be recorded and viewed at the student’s convenience, blended learning is different and accommodates both modes of delivery at varying schedules.

Online learning is supported by technology only whereas face to face can be conducted with or without the use of technology and blended learning uses both methods to facilitate the learning process.

 

 What are the strengths and weaknesses of each mode of delivery?

Strengths of online learning

1.      Convenient its accessible from any device, 24/7 access, does not require commuting and facilitates busy schedules and is cost effective. Allows high quality education from anywhere in the world.^1,2

2.      High level of synergy: allows dynamic interaction between instructor and students and students themselves.  Resources and ideas are shared, each student can contribute to the course discussions and comments on the work of others. The synergy that exists in the student-centered Virtual Classroom is one of the most unique and vital traits that the online learning format possesses.^1,2

3.      Enhanced learning: it incorporates increased understanding and retention of course content encourages meaningful discussions, enhances technology skills, time management, independence and self-discipline.^1.2

4.      Creative teaching:  interactive learning environment, creative approaches to instruction. Student-centered approaches, collaboration of various learning styles.^1,2

Weakness of online learning

1.      Equity and accessibility to technology students must be able to access the learning environment. Lack of access would exclude eligible students from the course. Internet access can also be a challenge due to connectivity, availability and cost.^1,2

2.      Computer literacy Both students and facilitators must possess a minimum level of computer knowledge in order to function successfully in an online environment. If they do not possess these technology tools, they would encounter difficulties and may not succeed in an online program.^1,2

3.      Limitations off technology: User friendly and reliable technology is critical to a successful online program. However, even the most sophisticated technology is not 100% reliable. However, breakdowns can occur at any point along the system. In situations like these, the technology is neither seamless nor reliable, and it can detract from the learning experience. Also, students who have limited knowledge in technology this can deter applicants to the program.^1,2

4.         Students:  students who have limited knowledge in technology online learning programs will deter applicants to the program.  In order to successfully participate in an online program, students must be well organized, self-motivated, and possess a high degree of time management skills in order to keep up with the pace of the course. For these reasons, online education is not appropriate for younger students. Limited social interactions.^1,2

 

Strengths of face-to-face learning

Collaboration and communication: In a face-to-face learning environment, students can collaborate and work together, improve their social skills and ability to work in teams.  students are exposed to different perspectives and ideas, which can lead to a deeper understanding of the subject matter. They develop interpersonal skills and communication occurs in real time.³

Reduce distractions: face-to-face learning can help reduce distractions. Students are less likely to be interrupted by notifications or other digital distractions. This can lead to better focus and concentration, which can improve learning outcomes.³

Greater Accountability: In a face-to-face learning environment, students are more accountable for their learning. They are less likely to procrastinate, as they have to attend classes, complete assignments, and participate in group activities. This leads to better learning outcomes and time management skills.³

 

Facilitates hands on learning: Some subjects, such as science or art, may require hands-on learning that cannot be replicated in an online environment. In both cases, face-to-face learning provides students with the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning activities that can enhance their understanding of the subject matter.³

Weakness of face to face learning

Cost: face to face learning can be costly students has to incur the cost of tuition fees in addition to commuting to a physical space to attend classes.⁴

Lack of Flexibility: There are no choices for student’s classes are a specific time and must be adhered to. Students have to travel to and from classes. Students face difficulties balancing their part time jobs, hobbies and classes at the same time.⁵

Geographical limitations:  classes are constrained by geographical proximity students must be present in a specific location. This can limit students access to educational opportunities based on remote location or their inability to commute to the physical learning institution.⁵

Potential for distractions: traditional classroom can be prone to distractions caused by external factors such as noise, interruptions or the presence of disruptive students.⁵

 

Strengths of blended learning

Increased effectiveness:

learner’s complete certain sections of training using online resources, saving time and in the classroom by enabling assessment of learners’ understanding after the fact. In addition, blended learning can incorporate a variety of different learning approaches and permits the curriculum to be customized to different learning styles.⁶

Increased engagement

It breaks the monotony of typical corporate training, giving learners a variety of digital tools and supportive resources to gain knowledge and truly retain information. This produces an interactive learning experience, by providing different options for self-study and thoughtfully combining digital and real-world training techniques.⁶

Flexibility

 

Blended learning fosters flexibility and convenience, and empower students by letting them learn at their own pace using digital tools and physical sessions. Learners can revisit microlearning lesson videos and take online assessments at their own pace to ensure they retain the material.⁶

Reduced cost students do not have to be physically present for 100% of the course. They are also required to engage in online learning, so this reduces the number of sessions that students have to commute for saving on time and transportation costs.⁶

Negative impact on teachers overworked

The teacher would have a significant amount of extra work to create the blended learning with the right syllabus, the right ratio between online and face to face classes.⁶

Negative impact on student’s cognitive overload.

Some teachers may over deliver the content and educational activities.⁶

Plagiarism and credibility problems

once the class is officially Internet-friendly, it’s hard to withstand the temptation of looking up things on the web or getting instant tips from fellow students. This may affect fair assessment and quality of course work.⁶

The technology challenges

The IT literacy can be both a challenge to the educator as well as the students. This can be a significant barrier to teaching and learning. Also, connectivity issues can hamper classes and access to internet can also be a challenge.⁷

 

Is any mode better than the other?

No mode is better than the other. It all depends on the learner’s circumstance and which mode fits their requirements. Which type of learning is best suited to their needs. As stated above each type of learning has its advantages and disadvantages and therefore the type of learning chosen would depend on the student’s circumstances and the course of study being offered. However, I personally prefer the blended form of learning because you are exposed to the both form of learning online and face to face combined. This permit the student the advantage of technology in learning and well as hands on experience in the face to face environment.
